Can I get help with my heating or power bills as a senior?

Last checked:

There is no single federal program that pays seniors' heating bills. Help comes from your province or territory and sometimes your power company: a bill credit, a yearly heating grant, emergency help, or free energy upgrades. What you can get depends on where you live, your age and your income.

Are you behind on a heating or power bill, or have you had a disconnection notice?

Do you live in Ontario?

We cannot tell from your answers

Call your utility today. Ontario has emergency help.

Why

In Ontario, if you are behind on your bills, emergency help can pay up to $500 toward electricity ($600 if your home is heated by electricity) and up to $500 toward natural gas. These are the amounts posted when we checked in October 2026.

What to do next

  1. Call your utility the same day. Ask how to apply for emergency help, and about a payment plan or equal monthly billing.
  2. Call 211 to find local emergency funds, food banks and other help.
  3. Once the emergency is handled, run this check again and answer No to the first question to see ongoing help, such as the Ontario Electricity Support Program.

Call your utility or fuel company today.

  2. Call 211 to find local emergency funds, food banks and other help.

Is your household's after-tax income $38,000 or less?

Household income is the income of everyone in your home added together, after tax. Renters and owners can both get Ontario's power bill credit.

Does any of these apply to your household?

You heat your home with electricity, someone uses certain medical devices at home, or someone in your home is Indigenous.

Likely eligible

You likely qualify for the Ontario Electricity Support Program.

Why

The Ontario Electricity Support Program (OESP) takes money off each electricity bill for lower-income households. On the current Ontario Energy Board table, households with after-tax income of $38,000 or less get $45 to $75 a month, depending on household size.

What to do next

  1. Apply online at OESP.ca or call 1-855-831-8151.
  2. People 65 or older renew every 5 years instead of every 2.
  3. Also claim the Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit on the ON-BEN form with your tax return. In Northern Ontario, the Northern Ontario Energy Credit is up to $189 for a single person or $290 for a family, for July 2026 to June 2027.
