About these terms
These terms apply when you use oasguide.ca or buy one of our guides. The website is run by TilyD Enterprises Ltd., 250 - 997 Seymour St., Vancouver, BC V6B 3M1, Canada ("we", "us"). Our email address is [email protected] and our phone number is 1-800-483-4151.
By using the site or buying a guide, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the site.
Nothing in these terms takes away a right you have under the consumer protection law of your province or territory. Where these terms and that law differ, the law applies.
Our guides are information, not advice
Our free guides, eligibility checks and paid guides explain how Canada's government benefits work, using the rules the government publishes. They are general information for the public.
- They are not legal advice, financial advice or tax advice. They do not take account of your own situation. For advice on your own situation, speak to a lawyer, an accountant, a financial planner or a legal clinic.
- An eligibility check gives a rough answer from the information you enter. It is not a decision. Only the government department that runs a benefit can decide whether you qualify and how much you receive.
- We cannot promise any result from an application, a request for reconsideration or an appeal.
- We do not act for you. We do not contact Service Canada, the Canada Revenue Agency or the Social Security Tribunal on your behalf, and we do not represent anyone.
Buying a guide or writing to us does not create a lawyer-client, adviser-client or any other professional relationship.
We are not the government
OAS Guides is an independent business. We are not part of, or connected to, the Government of Canada, Service Canada, the Canada Revenue Agency, Employment and Social Development Canada or any provincial government. They have not reviewed or approved our guides. Government services are free; you never need to buy anything from us to apply for a benefit.
Benefit amounts and rules change
Benefit amounts usually change every three months, and rules can change at any time. Each guide shows the date we last checked its figures against the government's own published sources. Before you act, check the current amounts and rules with the government department concerned. We correct errors when we find them, and we are glad to hear about any you find.
Your customer account
When you buy a guide, we open a customer account for you under the email address you paid with. You sign in with a one-time link that we email to you, or with a password if you choose to set one.
Please keep access to your email account and your password private. If you think someone else has used your account, tell us at once.
We may close an account that is used to break these terms or the law. If we close your account for any other reason, we will first give you a way to download the guides you bought.
Buying a guide
- Prices are in Canadian dollars. Any sales tax (GST/HST) is shown and added at checkout, before you pay.
- You pay on a secure page run by our payment company, Stripe. We never see or store your card number.
- After you pay, you can download your guide at once. We also email you a receipt with your download links. The links in the email work for 30 days. Your guides stay in your customer account after that.
- Your receipt is your copy of the agreement between you and us.
- If a guide does not download or the file is faulty, tell us and we will send you a working copy at no charge.
Refunds
You can have a full refund within 30 days of buying a guide. You do not need to give a reason. The full terms are in our refund policy at oasguide.ca/shop/refunds.php.
How you may use our guides
We, TilyD Enterprises Ltd., own the copyright in the text, tables, checklists, sample letters and design of this website and of our guides. All rights are reserved.
When you buy a guide, we give you a personal licence. You may:
- download the guide, keep copies on your own devices and print it for your own use
- share it with a family member, friend or adviser who is helping you with your own application, request or appeal
- copy and adapt the sample letters in it for your own use, or for a person you are helping without charge
You may not:
- sell, rent or give away copies of a guide, or post a guide where the public can read or download it
- use a guide or its sample letters in a business that charges people for help with benefits, unless we agree in writing
- remove our name or copyright notice from a guide
You may quote short passages from our free pages, and link to any page of our site, as long as you name OAS Guides as the source. Please ask us before copying anything longer.
Links to other websites
Our guides link to government websites and other sources so that you can check what we say. We do not control those websites and are not responsible for what they contain or for how they handle your information. A link is not an endorsement.
Using the site fairly
Please do not:
- try to get into parts of the site, accounts or files that are not yours
- interfere with the site, overload it or try to get around its security
- copy the site in bulk by automated means, except for search engines indexing it in the usual way
- use the site to break the law
Limits on our responsibility
We work to keep our guides accurate and up to date, but we cannot guarantee that every page is complete, correct or current at the moment you read it, or that the site will always be available.
To the extent the law allows:
- we are not responsible for any loss that results from decisions you make based on the general information on this site, including a benefit you did not receive or a deadline you missed
- if we are responsible to you for any reason connected with a guide you bought, our responsibility is limited to the amount you paid for that guide
These limits do not apply where the law does not allow them, including where a loss is caused by our own fault or negligence and the law of your province does not allow us to limit our responsibility for it. They do not affect the refund policy or any right you have under consumer protection law.
The law that applies
These terms are governed by the laws of British Columbia and the federal laws of Canada that apply there. Any dispute will be decided by the courts of British Columbia.
If you live in another province or territory, you keep any right you have under its consumer protection law, including the right to bring a claim in the courts where you live.
Changes to these terms
We may change these terms. The new version will be posted here with a new date. Changes do not affect a guide you have already bought: the terms in place on the day you bought it apply to that purchase.
